Interestingly Pakoštane is the home where Ante Gotovina, a former general of the Croatian army, lived during the Yugoslav conflict between 1991 and 1995.

Ante Gotovina was accused by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia of war crimes committed during Operation Storm, and on 15 April 2011 he was sentenced to 24 years in prison for acts of persecution, forced removal, looting, malevolent destruction, murder inhuman behavior and cruel treatment. At the same time, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia stated that these acts were the result of a criminal organization whose key figure was then Croatian President Franjo Tuđman. For most Croatian citizens, however, Ante Gotovina is a hero and not a war criminal. In 2012 General Ante Gotovina was acquitted of all charges and released. Today he lives and works in his native place Pakostane.
