Asseria

Asseria is the site of archaeological finds of the vast remains of the Illyrian-Roman municipia Asseria, located near Podgrađa about 6 km from Benkovec and about 20 km from Pakostane.

The first mention of Asseria is from the end of the 18th century by Venetian traveler Albert Fortis, who, full of enthusiasm to buy an old wooden tombstone, began to think about the cause of the sinks and was about to return to the site with the appropriate digging equipment and survey. In 1898, Viennese archaeologists came to Asseri to carry out the first professional excavations. In the early 20th century, the area was visited and described by the famous poet and writer Anten Tresić Pavicić. Until 1998, Asserija has been carrying out systematic archaeological research, which has led to a number of interesting lessons about life in the area.
